PROJECT: DARK ORBIT
For my major project, I picked a book called 'Dark Orbit' (2015) by Carolyn Ives Gilman.

It's a science fiction book that has two principal locations; the spaceship known as the 'Escher', and the planet that the crew are investigating, called 'Iris'. I decided that I wanted to tackle the interior of the 'Escher', diving head first into the heart of the ship, the refectory.

I didn't want the set to strictly just be an eating area, so incorporated other aspects of the 'Escher' into it. These include relaxation pods, an exercise track, social sitting areas and homelier features such as plants, water and simulated day-to-night lighting.

According to the description of the 'Escher' in the book, it rotates in space using certipetal force to produce its own artificial gravity. Taking inspiration from '2001: A Space Odyssey', I like the idea that the set had the ability to rotate, providing a practical world for the actors, and creating interesting shots like that of Stanley Kubrick.
